Do you know a lot about plumbing? If you do understand the current plumbing system in your home, are you thinking about revamping it? How does your plumbing skill set look? If you are unable to answer each of these questions satisfactorily, keep reading.
Avoiding frozen pies is easy if you ensure no area of your house ever falls below freezing and that any pipes which are exposed to such temperatures are protected with insulation. Your pipes can freeze if temperatures around them fall below freezing. In the best situation, it can take hours for frozen pipes to thaw and water to run freely again. However, they might burst, which will cause an enormous mess and repair bill.
Knowing what tools are what and the proper way to use them will make you much better at plumbing. Read every manual, and use the Internet and library to research the projects that you plan on doing. Before undertaking repairs on your own, you should have a plan; otherwise, a mistake could make repairs even more costly.
If your toilet gets clogged, your plunger is not fixing it, and your water level inside of the toilet appears low, you can sometimes fix the problem by dumping warm water into your toilet at waist level (or maybe even a little higher). After the water level in the toilet bowl has gone down, you can repeat the procedure until the blockage is cleared.
Every so often, inspect the floor around your toilet and see if it has gone soft. Sit reversed on the toilet (facing the tank) with your feet on the floor. Rock your weight onto each foot in turn and see if you can feel any weakness or "give" in the floor. You can wind up saving your money simply by noticing the problem early on.
Don't put fat, grease and other oils into the drain. These materials may be liquid when you pour them in, but they will solidify and cause problems. This is especially the case if you possess a garbage disposal; fats and oils cause blades to run less efficiently and slow. Make certain you dispose of all oils in other places other than the sink.
If you notice orange or pink stains in your bathroom fixtures, this is because of the iron in your water. You will need a water softener in order to take care of this problem, which you could purchase at a local store, or hire someone to go to your home and fix it for you.
If you have multiple plumbing problems, schedule all of them to be fixed together. You might be tempted to call the plumber every time you need something fixed, but if you wait and hire the plumber for a single visit, you can save up money for repairs. Doing this can also save you money, since it's common for plumbers to charge hourly rates. It'll condense the total amount of time they need to spend to something you can more easily afford.
